Merci Suarez Changes Gears
by Meg Medina

Merci Suárez knew that sixth grade would be different, but she had no idea just how different. For starters, she’s not exactly like the other kids at Seaward Pines because she and her older brother, Roli, are scholarship students. At home, Merci’s most trusted ally, Lolo, has been acting strangely and no one in her family will tell her anything about what’s going on with her grandfather. In a coming of age story that features family, friends, frenemies – and ripped off eyebrows – we look at the confusion and constant change that define middle school and the steadfast connection that defines family.

What is a community read?

A community read is an initiative where an entire community comes together to read, discuss, and engage with a single book. By sharing the experience of reading the same story, participants foster a sense of unity and open up opportunities for conversation across different backgrounds and age groups. Community reads often involve various events and activities—such as book discussions, cultural programs, and themed crafts—that deepen understanding of the book’s themes and allow for meaningful connections. These programs celebrate literacy while also promoting the importance of lifelong learning and empathy by encouraging readers to see the world through different perspectives.

The importance of a community read extends beyond simply enjoying a good book. It brings together people who may not otherwise cross paths, creating a shared experience that bridges gaps in age, culture, and social background. As participants discuss the story, they explore complex topics relevant to their lives and community, often leading to increased understanding and cooperation. For younger participants, it models the value of reading and open dialogue, while adults benefit from the opportunity to connect with others in a way that strengthens community bonds. Community reads demonstrate the power of literature to not only educate but also unite, fostering a culture of empathy, understanding, and civic engagement.
